Khidmat means to serve, dedicate oneself to something
Here is a couplet that uses this lafz and also elaborates upon the ingredients that make for a good ghazal in the Urdu zabaan.
Fikr Momin ki, zabaan Daagh Ki, Ghalib ka bayaan, Meer ka rang-e-sukhan ho toh ghazal hoti hai,
Sirf alfaaz hi maane nahi karte paida, jazbaye khidmate fann ho to ghazal hoti hai
The imagination of Momin,
The language of Daagh,
The style of Ghalib
The flair of Meer makes a ghazal come alive,
Words alone don’t create meaning,
Dedication to the art makes a ghazal come alive.
Here is another couplet, by Mahshar Badayuni :
Jaise hum aate hai khidmat mein, sabhi aaya Karen
Lekin ai jaan-e-karam jab hum chale jaaya Karen
The way I come in your service, everyone should come
But, my benevolent beloved, when I leave, everyone must leave too
(Source: rekhta.org)
perhaps the line ” Lekin ai jaan-e-karam jab hum chale jaaya Karen” would be better translated as
” But, my benevolent beloved, AFTER
I have left”
thank you
Very true
