Here is Urdu poet Momin Khan Momin’s most famous ghazal:
woh jo humme tumme qaraar thaa, tumhein yaad ho ke naa yaad ho
vahi yaani vaada nibhaah kaa tumhein yaad ho ke naa yaad ho
That understanding we had between us, maybe you remember or maybe you dont
That promise of staying together, maybe you remember or maybe you dont
koi baat aisi agar hui ke tumhaare ji ko buri lagi
to bayaan se pehale hi bhoolna tumhein yaad ho ke naa yaad ho
If something might happen, that was not to your liking
the forgetting before speaking it out, you might remember or you might not
suno zikr hai kayi saal kaa koi vaadaa mujh se thaa aap ka
vo nibhaane kaa to zikr kyaa tumhein yaad ho ke naa yaad ho
Listen, the story of many years ago, some promise you had made to me
Forget the keeping of that promise now, maybe you remember or maybe you don’t (even remember the promise)
vo naye gilahe vo shiqaayatein vo maze-maze ki hiqaayatein
vo har ek baat pe roothna tumhein yaad ho ke naa yaad ho
Those new resentments, those complaints, those light-hearted stories
That being displeased at everything, maybe you remember or maybe you don’t
kabhi hum mein tum mein bhi chaah thi, kabhi hum se tum se bhi raah thi
kabhi hum bhi tum bhi the aashna, tumhein yaad ho ke naa yaad ho
At some point, there was this desire in me and in you, sometime when there was this joy between me and you
Sometime we were dear friends, maybe you remember or maybe you dont
hue ittefaaq se gar baham vo vafaa jataane ko dam-ba-dam
gila-e-malaamat-e-akrabaa tumhein yaad ho ke naa yaad ho
If we got together by chance, to express loyalty with every breath
Those complaints and rebukes to loved ones, maybe you remember or maybe you dont
kabhi baithe sab mein jo ruubaruu to ishaaraton hi se guftaguu
vo bayaan shauq kaa baramalaa tumhein yaad ho ke naa yaad ho
Some time when we sat amongst everyone, facing each other, we conversed only through gestures and signs
That openness with which we expresses our desires, maybe you remember or maybe you dont
vo bigadnaa vasl ki raat kaa, vo na manana kisi baat kaa
vo nahin – nahin ki har aan adaa, tumhein yaad ho ke naa yaad ho
That belligerence on the night of our union, that not being in agreement to anything
That saying no-no to everything, maybe you remember or maybe you dont
jise aap kehte the baa-vafaa jise aap ginte the aashna
main wahi hoon Momin-e-mubtilaa, tumhein yaad ho ke naa yaad ho
The one you called loyal, the one you counted as your friend
I am that same fallen Momin, maybe you remember or maybe you don’t
