Urdu poetry is a rich tradition of poetry and has many different forms. It is basically an outcome of superimposition of Persian Language poetry on Khari Boli with Sanskrit. Many of the poetic forms and structures are also of Arabic origin.
Ghalib, Meer, Dard, Zauq, Jigar Iqbal, Josh, Faiz, are among the greatest poets of Urdu. Urdu poetry is fundamentally a performative poetry and its recital is held in Mushairas. Ghazal singing and Qawwali are also important expository forms of Urdu poetry. Bollywood movies have a major part in popularising Urdu poetry with younger generations.
At mehfil we want to celebrate Urdu poetry from the past and the present. Let’s get immersed in the sound of this magical language as we have an evening filled with recitations of poems by renowned poets that have lived and cherished our lives by penning such wonderful lines.
