At the request of an Urduwallahs reader and fellow Urdu enthusiast, Snehil Jain, we share with you the beautiful Urdu lafz – Falak which means the universe or something that has no boundaries, is limitless, like the sky. Hence, colloquially it is often used in poetry to mean the sky.

We have shared this lafz before. Click here to access the earlier post: https://urduwallahs.wordpress.com/2013/09/14/falak/

Adding to our earlier post, below is another couplet and a popular song from the movie Tashan, with the lafz:

Falak Tak Chal Saath Mere
Falak tak chal saath mere, falak tak chal saath chal..
Yeh baadal ki chaadar, yeh taaro ke aanchal chhup jaaye hum pal do pal
Falak tak chal saath mere, falak tak chal saath chal..

Dekho kaha aa gaye hum sanam saath chalte
Jaha din ki baahon mein raaton ke saaye hai dhalte
Chal woh chaubaare dhunde, jinmein chaahat ki bunde
Sach kar de sapno ko sabhi
Ho aankhon ko meeche meeche, main tere peechhe peechhe
Chal doon jo tu keh de abhi
Bahaaron ke chhat ho, duaaon ke khat ho, badhte rahe yeh ghazal..
Falak tak chal saath mere, falak tak chal saath chal

Dekha nahi maine pehle kabhi yeh najaara
Badla huwa sa lage mujhko aalam yeh saara
Suraj ko huyi haraarat, raaton ko kare sharaarat
Baitha hai khidaki pe teri
Ha iss baat pe chaand bhi bigada, katra katara woh pighala
Bhar aaya woh aankhon mein meri
Toh suraj bujha du, tujhe main saja du, savera ho tujhi se kal hooo..
Falak tak chal saath mere, falak tak chal saath chal
Yeh baadal ki chaadar, yeh taaro ke aanchal chhup jaaye hum pal do pal
Falak tak chal saath mere, falak tak chal saath chal……….

Link to the song from the movie is below. A rough English translation is also available in the video link.

And here is a couplet from the classic ghazal Patta Patta Boota Boota, by Mir Taqi Mir that was made legendary by Mehdi Hassan and uses the lafz ‘falak’:

Patta patta boota boota haal hamaara jaane hai
jaane na jaane gul hii na jaane, baagh to saara jaane haimir-taqi-mir-1

The entire garden including the leaves and samplings knows the yearning of my heart. But the flower (the apple of my eye or the most desired) does not know this yearning.

lagne na de bas ho to us ke gauhar-e-gosh ko baale tak
us ko falak chashm-e-mah-o-Khur kee putlee kaa taaraa jaane hai

The beautiful essence of this line is that if it were in my power, I would protect her just like eyelids give protection to the eyes
