Azal means eternity, time immemorial
Given below is a couplet by Poet Shahryar which explains this word explicitly.
na jiski shakl hai koi na jiska naam hai koi,
ek aisi shae ka kyun hamein azal se intezaar hai
The entire poem was used in the film Umrao Jaan directed by Muzzafar Ali in 1981. The film is an adaptation of the book written by Mirza Hadi Ruswa based on the famous Lucknow courtesan. The film starred Bollywood actress Rekha and Farooq Shaikh as leads. Given below are the entire lyrics and the translation.
