Khumār – means intoxication. The word comes from the Arabic root ‘Khmr’ which means alcoholic wine.
Pehla Nasha Pehla Khumar is a popular song from the 1994 Hindi movie, Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander, written by Majrooh Sultanpuri.
The difference between khumar and nasha, which also means intoxication is that nasha is the rising effect of alcohol whereas khumar is when the intoxicating feeling is beginning to fade away, as in a hangover.
Chaahe tum kuchh na kaho maine sun liya
Ki saathi pyaar ka mujhe chun liya, chun liya, maine Sun liya
Pehla nasha, Pehla khumaar
Naya pyaar hai naya intezaar
Kar loon main kya apna haal
Aye dil-e-bekaraar, Mere dil-e-bekaraar, Tu hi bata
Pehla nasha, Pehla khumaar
Udta hi firoon in hawaon mein kahin
Ya main jhool jaoon in ghataon mein kahin
Ek kar doon aasmaan zameen
Kaho yaaron kya karoon kya nahin
Pehla nasha, Pehla khumaar
Naya pyaar hai naya intezaar
Kar loon main kya apna haal
Aye dil-e-bekaraar, Mere dil-e-bekaraar, Tu hi bata
Pehla nasha, Pehla khumaar
Usne baat ki kuchh aise dhang se
Sapne de gaya vo hazaaron range ke
Usne baat ki kuchh aise dhang se
Sapne de gaya vo hazaaron range ke
Reh jaoon jaise main haar ke
Aur choome vo mujhe pyaar se
English translation is below:
Though you didn’t say anything, I heard you
That you chose me your mate, You chose me, and I heard it
The first elated intoxication, the first hangover
Love is new to me, so is this longing
What will I do with myself
Oh restless heart, My restless heart, tell me
Shall I roam around along this wind
Or shall I swing on these clouds
May I unite the sky and earth
Tell me friends, what I should do and what not
He spoke to me such a way that
He gave me dreams in a thousand colours
I remain surrendered here like this
And he kisses me with love
