Here is a heart-warming ghazal by Abdul Hafeez ‘Hafeez Hoshiarpuri’, who was born in Hoshiarpur in 1912. He was considered an Ustaad (master) poet of Urdu language and was very famous amongst the Urdu poets of his time. Nasir Kazmi, one of the renowned poets of Urdu language was his student (in poetry) and started writing ghazals under Hafeez sahib’s guidance. Hafeez Hoshiarpuri died in 1973 in Karachi, Pakistan.
tamaam-e-umr teraa intezaar humne kiya
is intezaar mein kis kis se pyaar humne kiya
My entire lifetime I waited for you
While I waited, there were many I loved
talaash-e-dost ko ik umr chaahiye ai dost
ki ek umr teraa intezaar humne kiya
The quest needs an entire lifetime, my friend
It is an entire lifetime, that I waited for you
tere khayaal mein dil shaadman raha barson
tere huzoor ise so gawaar humne kiya
Thinking of you, my heart remained joyful for years
Your Highness, I bore the tolerance of that
ye tishnagii hai ke unse qareeb rahkar bhi
‘Hafeez’ yaad unhe bar bar humne kiya
This longing is so intense that, despite being close to her
Hafeez, I remembered her again and again
