Ahmed Faraz born Syed Ahmad Shah  on 12 January 1931 in Kohat died 25 August 2008) was a Urdu Poet. He was acclaimed one of the modern Urdu poets of the last century. ‘Faraz’ is his pen name.

Given below is an amazing poem called ‘ Suna Hai Log Use Aankh Bhar Ke Dekhte Hain’. This poem has a very understated yet lilting romance.

sunaa hai log use aaNkh bhar ke dekhte haiN
so us ke shah’r meN kuchh din Thahar ke dekhte haiN

sunaa hai rabt hai us ko Kharaab haaloN se
so apne aap ko barbaad kar ke dekhte haiN

(rabt : closeness)

sunaa hai dard kii gaahak hai chashm-e-naazuk us kii
so ham bhii us kii galii se guzar ke dekhte haiN

(chashm-e-naazuk : delicate eyes; gaahak : customer)

sunaa hai us ko bhii hai sher-o-shaayarii se shaGhaf
so ham bhii mojaze apne hunar ke dekhte haiN

(shaGhaf : interest; mojaze : miracles)

sunaa hai bole to baatoN se phuul jhhaRte haiN
ye baat hai to chalo baat kar ke dekhte haiN

sunaa hai raat use chaaNd taktaa rahtaa hai
sitaare baam-e-falak se utar kar dekhte haiN

mizaaj aur hii laal-o-gauhar ke dekhte haiN

sunaa hai chashm-e-tasavvur se dasht-e-imkaan meN
palang zaave (?) us kii kamar ke dekhte haiN

(chashm-e-tasavvur : eyes of imagination)

ke phuul apanii qabaayeN katar ke dekhte haiN

(qabaayeN : tunic)

vo sarv-qad hai magar be-gul-e-muraad nahiiN
ke us shajar pe shaguufe samar ke dekhte haiN

(sarv-qad : tall and graceful; shaguufe : bud; samar : fruit)

bas ek nigaah se luTataa hai qaafilaa dil kaa
so rah-ravaan-e-tamannaa bhii Dar ke dekhte haiN

(rah-ravaa.N : travellers)

sunaa hai us ke shabistaan se muttasil hai bahisht
makiiN udhar ke bhii jalve idhar ke dekhte haiN

(shabistan : bedroom; muttasil : near; makiin : tenant)

ruke to gardisheN us kaa tavaaf kartii haiN
chale to us ko zamaane Thaher ke dekhte haiN

(gardish : time)

kise nasiib ke be-pairahan use dekhe
kabhii kabhii dar-o-diivaar ghar ke dekhte haiN

(be-pairahan : without clothes)

kahaaniyaaN hii sahii sab mubaalaGe hii sahii
agar vo Khvaab hai taabiir kar ke dekhte haiN

(mubaalaGe : beyond one’s limits)

ab us ke shahar meN ThahareN ki kuuch kar jaayeN
“Faraz” aao sitaare safar ke dekhte haiN
