Anjuman (Urdu: انجمن)means an assembly, association, gathering or meeting.
Anjuman is originally a Persian word, its roots are from the word najm or najam which means a star. Anjuman is the plural form which means a group of stars. It was then adapted to mean an esteemed assembly or association, gathering, meeting etc.
Here is a couplet from the classic Umrao Jaan song “dil cheez kya hai” sung by Asha Bhonsle and picturised on Rekha:
Is anjuman mein aap ko aana hai baar baar
Deevaar-o-dar ko gaur se pehchaan lijiye
इस अंजुमन में आप को आना है बार बार
दीवार-ओ-दर को गौर से पहचान लीजिये
