The film was a box office disaster in its time but was later resurrected as a world cinema cult classic in the 1980s. The film’s music was composed by S. D. Burman and the lyrics were written by Kaifi Azmi. Here is one of the best songs of the film which has been a classic of Indian cinema. It was sung by Geeta Dutt in the film.

Waqt ne kiya kya haseen sitam
Tum rahe na tum, hum rahe na hum
Bekaraar dil is tarah mile
Jis tarah kabhi hum juda na the
Tum bhi kho gaye, hum bhi kho gaye
Ek rah ape chalk e do kadam
Jayenge kahan, soojhta nahin
Chal pade magar raasta nahi
Bun rahe hain dil khwab dum-ba-dum
Waqt ne kiya kya haseen sitam
Tum rahe na tum, hum rahe na hum

The English translation from the Penguin Poetry book “Selected poems: Kaifi Azmi” as translated by Pavan K. Varma, is below:

With Such Sweet Revenge

With Such Sweet Revenge time cast its die
You remained not you, I remained not I

Anxious hearts met in such a way
As if we never had gone astray,
You soon were lost, lost too was
But two steps together on one pathway.

Where can we go, no answer can we find
We could begin to walk, no avenue would we find,
What is it we seek, we don’t have a clue
Our hearts weave a dream, each moment, ‘tis true.

With such sweet revenge time cast its die
You remained not you, I remained not I
