Did you know award-winning hindi film actor Dharam Singh Deol better known as Dharmendra reads and writes Urdu. He is penning his autobiography in Urdu itself as it is a language which comes most naturally to him.
An excerpt from an article by the Times of India published in 2011 shows Dharmendra’s love for the language:
‘Remember we told you that the He-man of Bollywood, Dharmendra, will be penning his autobiography in Urdu. Well, the news is that, the veteran actor has started work on the book, which will narrates the journey of the star starting from his childhood to current date. When we caught up with the evergreen Dharam paaji in the capital, he said, “Malik ne itna pyaar diya hai ki bas man karta hai woh pyaar mein logon mein baant ta rahoon. I’m writing that book for everyone who loves me. I want to tell my story to people, who look up to me for inspiration, if I can do it, so can anyone else.” But why in Urdu? “That’s because Urdu is a very beautiful language. Aur kyuki maine Urdu padhi hai, mujhe lagta hai ki jo main kehna chahta hoon, woh main iss bhasha mein asani se keh sakta hook.”‘
