One of Urdu’s boldest and most outspoken women writers, Ismat Chughtai played an important role in the development of the modern Urdu short story as we know it today. In 1942, when she wrote Lihaaf (The Quilt), a breakthrough in Urdu short story writing, a storm of controversy broke out. Ismat was charged with obscenity and submitted to a trial in Lahore.
