If you are searching for a place that teaches Urdu in the city, we have the perfect recommendation. From our own experience we can tell you that there are weekend classes held on every Saturday and Sundays in a little school where you might find not more than 5 -7 students mesmerised by the couplets of Mir, Faiz and Ghalib, amidst the sound of the honking cars and screaming vendors.
The one year course commences in the month of May and is culminated with an exam held in April, which will provide you an Urdu diploma from Delhi University. It is advisable to call the school which conducts the course in February to get accurate details as their schedules change constantly.
Professor Firoz Ahmed patiently and explicitly explains each urdu alphabet and its nuances. These classes are conducted for two hours and the professor ends the class with a couplet, which for us was the highlight of every class. It was his teaching method and clarity, which accentuated our passion towards learning Urdu further.
As months flow by, you will graduate to learning words and then sentences. Soon you will be reading short stories and will be part of a more romantic universe.

I tried calling the number you have given with the address of the college, but apparently it is unavailable. Any other means of reaching out to them apart from visiting the college?
Thanks
Akkta
Hi Akkta,
Thanks for writing in. Try Firoze Sir’s mobile number +91 9619800488. he can give you the details directly.
Firoze Sir sounded like such a nice person. I’m glad to begin lessons from May this year. Will have to visit the College soon. The only glitch is that I can’t enroll for the Diploma course this year as the last date was 29th Feb :-/ but I can still do the course. It’s quite unfortunate but I hope I get to make the most of this opportunity.
Thanks a ton guys!
Hello, is there some place in the suburbs to learn Urdu? Or any professor who would like to teach Urdu privately for the love of the language? I would love to learn the language and savor the beauty of literature work created in Urdu.
Hi Teja,
I got in touch with Mr. Jawwad Dhanse recently with a similar query (after recommendations on this very blog). He is the Course Co-ordinator for the IGNOU Urdu Certificate/Diploma Course being conducted at Shibli Nomani School in Juhu.
Presently, there are no courses for beginners at the school because they need a group of more than 7-8 people. However, Jawwad Sir expressed the possibility of giving private tutions on weekdays to interested people.
I was myself looking for others interested in learning the language so that we could set up something around Jogeshwari (also where he stays). We can discuss and see if it works out for us together.
An equally keen Urdu enthusiast,
Akkta
